“He (Carlo J. Caparas) was obviously added by the Malacanang. We did not nominate him. We guess it’s a presidential prerogative. We feel bad, I mean, we have no questions about Manuel Conde pero tinalo ni Caparas yung ni-recommend namin, si Celso Castillo. Walang comparison sa body of works and we didn’t mind that Celso lost to Conde. Saka bakit 2 (ang awardee) for visual arts? Pinilit lang yon, siningit lang yon.” —

Stable tumblarity

Usually to keep the unpredictable and fickle-minded tumblarity in stable condition, I line some posts for the day, likes interesting and inspirational posts, and reblogs some more. It fluctuates higher and lower most of the time, but good thing is it’s stable. Any thoughts on keeping your tumblarity stable?

“I’m probably 20 percent atheist and 80 percent agnostic. I don’t think anyone really knows. You’ll either find out or not when you get there, until then there’s no point thinking about it.” —

With President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo due to step down from Malacañang next year, talk has turned to the legacies that she will be leaving. One of the legacies most often mentioned is the legacy of corruption. Ms Arroyo is perceived to be one of the most corrupt presidents the country has ever had. During her incumbency the country has sunk to the depths of corruption, such that Transparency International last year ranked the Philippines 141st in a list of 180 countries.

We only have one life and we should do all we can to make it a meaningful one. Life and being human are not about making more money than we know how to spend. It is not about doing whatever it takes to get ahead of others in having a life of comfort. It is not about achieving for achievement’s sake. Life is about enjoying the beauty of a sunset, the camaraderie of a barkada, and the peace of a lazy Sunday afternoon. Most of all, life should be about giving to those who need help.

I seriously propose that the state of the Nation Address be delivered not in July, as tradition dictates, but on April 1, as sanity dictates… Maybe the day devoted to deception might have persuaded President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Monday to tell the truth. And deliver this speech:

I did not invent buying congressmen, I merely improved on it… I did not invent buying bishops, I merely paid them more… I did not invent buying the courts; the judges were for sale long before me, some of them toting price tags on their backs… I did not invent corruption, I merely perfected it… I did not invent lying in office, Marcos did it before me… I did invent stealing the vote… And of course I did invent a new reason for quarantine… Meanwhile I’ll just content myself with being sorry enough to punish myself—as I did the last time I said, “I…am…sorry…”—by sticking around. See you next SONA.

Women are getting beautiful

…Scientists have found that evolution is driving women to become ever more beautiful, while men remain as aesthetically unappealing as their caveman ancestors.

The researchers have found beautiful women have more children than their plainer counterparts and that a higher proportion of those children are female. Those daughters, once adult, also tend to be attractive and so repeat the pattern.

Over generations, the scientists argue, this has led to women becoming steadily more aesthetically pleasing, a “beauty race” that is still on. The findings have emerged from a series of studies of physical attractiveness and its links to reproductive success in humans…

“It makes me wonder what people a hundred years from now will think of our popular fiction, our popular movies. What do we take for granted that they will find odd, and perhaps even distasteful? You can already see some obvious candidates in things that are still accepted, but barely, like smoking. How curious it is to see a movie in which everyone is puffing on a cigarette - for example, in Good Night and Good Luck, where Edward R. Murrow is shown delivering prime time television news with a cigarette between his fingers. What will people think of our enormous steak dinners and obese portions of food? That’s on the cusp of changing. What will they think of our profligate use of fossil fuels and other non-renewable resources? Our assumption that the American way of life will go on forever, just as it is, much as the British thought their empire would go on forever? What about our assumptions about unlimited technological progress? Will science fiction visions of star flight or “the Singularity” seem as quaint as “the White Man’s Burden”? Above all, what will they think of the appalling amount of waste in our culture? Have you ever walked through a tourist area - say Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco - and seen entire stores devoted to schlock, made in developing countries by people who must scratch their heads in wonder at a people so wealthy that they can afford to spend money on things that are so utterly and obviously useless?” —Tim O’Reilly (via tmblg)
